Winner of the mile at the Armory New York After a somewhat disappointing finish by her own standards in the European cross country championships before Christmas, Mary Cullen from Sligo bounced back with a tremendous win in the mile at the New Balance Games at the New York Armory last night. Stepping down in distance Mary settled towards the rear of the field for much of the race. Then, with 400m remaining she stormed into the lead and held off a fierce challenge in the closing stages to win in a time of 4:32.29. This performance augers well for the remainder of the indoor season. 1. Mary Cullen (IRE) 4.32.29 2. Sara Hall (USA) 4.32.68 3. Carmen Douma-Hussar (CAN) 4.32.78 4. Hilary Stellingwerff (CAN) 4.32.90 5. Marina Muncan (BOS) 4.35.43 ========================================= The Scottish indoor championships on Saturday attracted a big entry from Irish athletes, and some great results followed. David McCarthy (Le Cheile) and Brian Doyle (Harrow AC) both won their heats of the 400m, setting the scene for a good final. David proved the stronger with an excellent win in 48.21, with Brian third in 48.77. Paul Hession (Athenry) clocked 6.83 to win his heat of the 60m and then improved on that in the final, finishing second in 6.78. Emmet Dunleavy, a clubmate of Mary Cullen in Sligo, improved on his second place finish in the 1,000m at the AAI Indoor Games to win the 1,500m in a time of 3:54.35. Orla Drumm (UCC) winner of the 1,000, at the AAI Indoor Games, had to settle for second in the 1,500m in a time of 4:28.36. Ailis McSweeney (Leevale) clocked 7.60 for silver in the 60m, and she also clocked 25.57 in her heat of the 200m but did not run the final. 60m Women - Final 2 135 Ailis McSweeney Leevale AC 7.60 200m Women - Round: 1 Heat: 1 of 1 135 Ailis McSweeney Leevale AC 25.57 1500m Women - Final 2 182 Orla Drumm UCC AC 4:28.36 1500m Men - Final 1 103 Emmett Dunleavy 3:54.35 4 100 Martin Conroy Sligo 3:59.60 5 101 Garratt Coughlan 4:06.02 Crusaders 6 104 Ronan Kearns 4:07.90 Rathfarnham WSAF 60m Men - Final 1 32 Nick Smith Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers 6.78 2 12 Paul Hession Athenry 6.78 60m Men - Round: 1 Heat: 1 of 4 15 Daniel Kavanagh Clonliffe Harriers 7.20 5 33 Dermot Smith Navan AC 7.23 60m Men - Round: 1 Heat: 2 of 1 12 Paul Hession Athenry 6.83 6 18 Lorcan Kinsella DSD 7.51 400m Men - Final 1 90 David McCarty Le Cheile 48.21 3 81 Brian Doyle Harrow AC 48.77 400m Men - Round: 1 Heat: 1 of 1 81 Brian Doyle Harrow AC 49.11 3 84 Andrew Kidd Dundrum South Dublin 53.06 400m Men - Round: 1 Heat: 2 of 1 90 David McCarty Le Cheile 48.65 Nick Hogan Dundrum South Dublin DNF 200m Men - Final 3 13 Nick Hogan Dundrum South Dublin 22.57 200m Men - Round: 1 Heat: 1 of 5 84 Andrew Kidd Dundrum South Dublin 24.99 200m Men - Round: 1 Heat: 2 of 1 13 Nick Hogan Dundrum South Dublin 22.59 4 33 Dermot Smith Navan AC 23.27 5 18 Lorcan Kinsella DSD 23.89 3000m Men - Final 2 299 Finton McGee Lucan Warriors 8.54.06 400m Women - Round: 1 Heat: 1 of 5 141 Dawn Kelly Belgooly 1:02.75 400m Women - Round: 1 Heat: 2 of 4 172 Niamh Cremin Leevale AC 59.952 800m Men - Round: 1 Heat: 2 of 3 52 Kevin McCloy Mid Ulster Athletic Club 1:55.28 4 49 Ivan Kinahan Rathfarnham WSAF 2:02.03 High Jump Women - Final 5 199 Claire McNamara Athenry Athletic Club 1m65 8 201 Grace O'Rourke DSD 1m60 Shot Put Women - Final 5 162 Lucy Moore-Fox DSD 8m26 Triple Jump Men - Final 5 64 Denis Finnegan Spa-Muckross A.C. 13.58 ========================================== US Collegiate Results from the weekend One Mile 13 Dunne, Eoin DePaul 4:36.20 500m 13 Byrne, Richard DePaul 1:11.75 3,000m 16 Byrne, Richard DePaul 9:01.89 Notre Dame Opener Notre Dame, IN 6 Colin Costello Arkansas 1:52.51 3,000m 7 Eimer O'Brien Ark Tech 10:08.39 Razorback Invitational Univ.of Arkansas--Fayetteville, AR One Mile 4 Galligan, Rose-Anne Tennessee4:49.11 800 5 Galligan, Rose-Anne Tennessee 2:12.98 Rod McCravy Memorial Univ. of Kentucky Lexington,KY 800m 6 Maunsell, Aisling Western Kentucky 2:27.18 Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider Invitational 3,000n 3 Bermingham, Daire FR Stony Brook 8:36.34 One Mile 2 Huet, Laura FR Stony Brook 5:11.60 Great Dane Classic Armory Track & Field Center New York, NY 3,000m 20 Guiney, Cheryl JR High Point 11:10.81 University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational PGSL Center in Landover, MD =========================================== Meanwhile, the AAI Masters indoor track and field championships attracted a bumper entry to the Nenagh Olympic stadium yesterday.
