The Athletics Ireland Development Team hosted a series of summer courses for primary teachers around the country during the first week in July. The course, entitled 'Athletics in the Primary School - Teaching the FUNdamentals' was designed to assist primary teachers deliver the Athletics strand in the PE curriculum, while also enabling the teachers to deliver high quality athletics training sessions as an extra-curricular activity. This course was held over five days. The first two days of the course were designed to enable teachers to introduce children to athletics through fun based activities with the aim of developing physical literacy. Physical literacy refers to the ABC’s of movement - Agility, Balance and Co-ordination - and focuses on the FUNdamental stage of the Long Term Athlete Development model. Days 3, 4 and 5 focused on the learning to train stage on the LTAD pathway. Coaches working at this stage will continue to develop the fundamental skills of the athlete. Fun and participation are still the main aims of the course. The crucial development at the “learning to train” stage is the development of sports specific skills, learning the correct posture, movements of all running, jumping and throwing events. Feedback from course participants was enormously positive and all felt empowered to lead school children in athletics activities with confidence come next September. If you are a primary teacher than mark this course in your diary for next July. For further information contact any member of the Athletics Ireland Development Team.
