Junior races added to programme Over the years leading athletes from South Africa have regularly visited Leeside and competed at Ireland's premier international track and field meeting. In fact, the great Elana Mayer still holds the meeting record for 5000m of 15:06.55 set back in 1995. On June 30. four world class South African athletes headed by the 2003 World Champion for the high jump, Jacques Freitag, will compete in Cork. Freitag who has jumped 2.38m has just returned to competition having missed most of 2006 due to injury. Also in action in the shot will be 2006 Commonwealth gold medallist Janus Robberts who has a best throw of 21.97m, well in excess of the current meet record of 20.14 set last year by Poland's Tomasz Majewski. Another Commonwealth champion, Anika Smit, who has leaped 1.93m already this year will be attemping to reverse the placings with the holder, Ireland's Deirdre Ryan, who delighted the home fans by winning the high jump in 2006 with Smit in second spot. Karin Mey, the national champion, with a best of 6.84m competes in the long jump. Two junior races are again included at this year's Cork City Sports i.e. 1500m for junior men and 800m for junior ladies.
