A team of 23 athletes are making their way to the Franconville U18 Meet set to take place across this weekend (July 31st to August 1st).
The competition will give athletes the opportunity to compete on the international stage in a year where the European U18 Championships, which were set to take place at the end of August, were cancelled.
Ireland have sent a strong team to France which includes recent European U20 gold medallist Nicholas Griggs (Mid-Ulster AC) who won Ireland’s 4th gold medal at the recent European U20 Championships. 16-year-old Griggs will be back in action in the 3000m from 5pm on Saturday.
Doheny AC’s Maeve O’Neill was another to perform superbly at the European U20 Championships and will also be in action at this weekend’s French Meet. O’Neill ran the race of her life to book her place in the semi-finals of the European U20 Championships, claiming a stunning PB of 2:07.91 (800m) in the process. O’Neill will be back in 800m action from 3pm on Saturday.
Conor Callinan of Leevale will be another looking to continue his wonderful season in the pole vault. Callinan became the youngest ever winner of an Irish senior outdoor title when he won the pole vault on a cold blustery day in Morton Stadium on Jun 26th, before going on to set a new Irish Youth record of 4.61m at the Munster junior championships in MTU last weekend. The Leevale athlete will be in action from 4pm on Saturday.
