Walsh and Morland excel in Colombia
Michaela Walsh and Elizabeth Morland have been mixing it with the best youth athletes in the world at the World Youth Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia.
Elizabeth Morland got her campaign off to an excellent start yesterday by setting personal bests in the 100m hurdles (13.62) and 200m (24.84) along with good efforts in the high jump (1.67m) and shot put (11.84m), which left her in eighth position out of 37 competitors overnight on a total of 3,404 points.
Today, Morland takes to the track in the long jump at 4pm (Irish time), the javelin throw at 6:45pm and finally the 800m at 12:15am in the early hours of tomorrow morning. Her thoughts trackside with Cathal Dennehy are below.
Walsh displays world class talent
Michaela Walsh continued her excellent championships by qualifying for today’s hammer final with a best throw of 61.71 – putting her seventh of the 12 competitors heading into the final. The final takes place in the early hours of tomorrow morning at 12:45 am Irish time and there looks like there is more to come. Walsh finished 9th in the final of the shot put with a best of 16.22m. This performance came after producing a PB of 16.63m to make the final.
Heartbreak for Power
Unfortunately Templeogue's Nadia Power had a heavy fall mid-race in her 1500m heat and was unable to finish. She will have gained invaluably from the experience in a season where she has made marked improvements.
