Westport AC’s New Era Celebrated with Sonia O’Sullivan Visit

11 May 2026

For Westport AC, the past three years have marked a transformational chapter, one defined by ambition, community spirit, and lasting legacy.

In 2023, the club took a major step forward by applying for Sports Capital Funding. Alongside this, significant investments were made in upgrading existing facilities, including the refurbishment of toilet amenities, the installation of a kitchenette and recreation area, a second long jump pit and the addition of a much-needed sheltered covered space at the track.

These works were completed and fully funded within the year, greatly enhancing the day-to-day experience for members.

Building on this momentum, 2024 saw a major accessibility-focused development. A substantial investment of €58,000 was made to transform the 100-metre straight into a fully wheelchair-accessible entrance, complete with safety railings and a viewing stand.

This upgrade addressed what had previously been an unsafe access point, ensuring a more inclusive and secure environment for all athletes and visitors.

The development of facilities focused on inclusion so all members of the community can participate

That same vision continued to drive progress, and in 2024 the club’s application for Sports Capital Funding was successfully approved, paving the way for a landmark development.

Construction of the new track began in spring 2025 and was completed by the end of August that year. By the early stages of the 2025–2026 season, Westport AC proudly unveiled a state-of-the-art six-lane, 320-metre tartan track, complete with seven 100-metre sprint lanes. For one of the largest juvenile athletics clubs outside Dublin, the facility represents a significant leap forward.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the track is now fully completed, funded, and paid for, thanks to a powerful combination of national funding and extraordinary local fundraising efforts. It is truly a community-built facility.

Since returning to training in September 2025, the track has already become a vibrant hub of activity. The club successfully hosted the Mayo U9 and U10 Championships, welcoming 320 young athletes in its first competitive event.

Momentum continued into April 2026 with a memorable visit from Irish athletics legend Sonia O’Sullivan.

Over two inspiring days, the club hosted four events. In partnership with the Dare to Believe programme, 510 primary school children from 11 local schools took part in a dynamic day of activity, supported by Transition Year students from Sacred Heart School and Rice College.

Club members enjoyed a special evening celebration featuring a plaque unveiling, Q&A, and a lap with Sonia.

More than 350 additional students attended sessions the following morning, bringing the total to over 1,000 children who had the chance to say they ran alongside an Olympic legend, a world champion, and one of Ireland’s greatest sporting icons on their very own track.

Sonia’s return for one final club training session brought an unforgettable experience for young athletes to a fitting close.

Beyond competition, the facility has become a vital shared space. Located in the heart of the town, it is accessible to local schools, many within walking distance, including Sacred Heart School and Rice College.

Importantly, the development prioritised inclusivity, with full wheelchair accessibility ensuring athletes of all abilities can participate.

With top-class amenities including two long jump pits, a shot put area, Olympic-standard high jump equipment, and a dedicated recreational space, Westport AC is now exceptionally well equipped for the future. Backed by over 60 volunteer coaches and a growing membership from age seven upwards, the club continues to thrive.

Westport AC’s journey is a testament to what can be achieved through vision, collaboration, and community pride, laying a strong foundation for generations of athletes to come.
