The men’s 20k walk saw Irish champion and record holder Robert Heffernan put in the performance of his life to finish a brilliant sixth. Right from the gun he placed himself perfectly and was never too far off the medal positions. This was a battling performance by the Corkman and continued the outstanding efforts he has been making in the past months that saw him set new Irish records over 20k on the roads and 5,000m on the track. The extremely warm weather undoubtedly made life difficult but he did not let it affect him as he raced to his best ever placing in international competition. Well done Rob.

Later Joanne Cuddihy continued the great start to the championships with a third place finish in the second heat of the 400m. Her time of 51.55 was a season’s best and she qualifies automatically for tomorrow’s semi-final (1.10pm Irish time). Michelle Carey, Derval O’Rourke, Roisin McGettigan and Fionnuala Britton are all in action tomorrow in what should be a very busy day for the Irish
