Oslo Bislett Games winner Laverne Jones (Virgin Islands) heads a tremendous lineup for the womens' sprints at this year's Cork City Sports to be staged on June 30 at UCC Sportsgrounds The Mardyke. Jones who also set a new national record of 22.64 over 200m at Prague last week has a best of 11.15 for 100m while rivals Tahesia Harrigan (BVI) and current European no.I Yevgenia Polyakova (Russia) have run marginally faster. With leading U.S. sprinters Crystal Cox, LaShauntea Moore and Carmelita Jeter also in the 100m, the home representatives of national champion Anna Boyle and local Cork girl Ailis McSweeney will have a golden chance to improve on their best times for the event. Over the longer sprint Kilkenny born Joanne Cuddihy who made the 2006 European Championships 400m final, setting a national record in the process, will be targeting Sarah Reilly's Irish record of 23.02 for 200m and with Jones, Jeter, and Moore all having run well inside 23 seconds this year the UCD medical student will have every incentive to run fast. Dubliner, Ciara Sheehy, also competes in the 200m along with Britain's Emily Freeman but Jones seems the one they will all have to beat.
