Irish athlete qualifies for World Final with new Irish record Irish athlete Colin Quirke has qualified for the final of the shot put at the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The Californian based athlete had a mark of 19.33 in this morning’s qualifying pool, which is a new Irish youth record. This placed Quirke in 6th overall, qualifying him for tonight’s final against some of the best young athletes in the world. The 17-year-old is son of former Irish Olympian Paul Quirke who still holds the Irish Senior Shot Put record. This is Colin’s first major championship competing for Ireland after declaring for the Irish team ahead of his native USA. The final of the Shot Put at the World Youth Championships takes place tonight at 18:45 (17:45 Irish time).
