First Day's action in Ostrava Two members of the Irish team at the World Youth championships in Ostrava were in action today. In the qualification rounds of the shot Colin Quirke made a big impact to finish sixth with a new Irish youths best performance of 19.33m. Quirke, who attends the Los Gatos High School in California, was competing in his first international and his performance qualified him for the final earlier this evening. In the final he threw 18.98m with his second throw, and, as it turned out, that was his only mark of the competition. The qualification rounds of the girls high jump were also held today. Here Grainne Moggan cleared 1.60m and 1.65m at the first attempt, but knocked the bar with each of her three attempts at 1.70m and will not progress to the final. For each of the four Irish athletes competing this is a huge venture for them and they will surely benefit from the experience. Tomorrow Barry Pender and Koroush Fouroghi compete in the high jump, while Colin Quirke will be back in action on Friday in the discus.
