Wright walks to Swiss success

Alex Wright (Leevale) had an excellent win over 20km in a personal best of 1:21:19 at the 14th Memorial Mario Albisetti Race Walk in Lugano, Switzerland last Sunday (March 19).

“Thrilled to start my outdoor season with a win at the prestigious Lugano Trophy over the 20km and setting a new personal best,” said Wright afterwards on his fine win.

In a good day Irish walkers Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny) had his fastest season opener with 1:25:33 to finish 11th – one place ahead of Cian McManamon (Westport) who recorded a PB  of 1:25:10.

“New personal best over 20km in 1:25:51 at the weekend in Switzerland,” said McManamon. “Finally some return on all the sacrifices. (It) qualifies me for the Irish team for the World University Games in Taiwan.”

In other recent action across the globe, Sean Tobin (Clonmel) was part of a winning distance medley relay team for Ole Mississippi at the NCAA Indoor Championships while Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (DSD) finished eighth in the women’s mile in 4:34.78.
