Zoe Brown representing her club Raheny Shamrock AC at the national league in Athlone yesterday (22nd June) achieved the standard for the European Championships in Zurich with a clearance of 4.40m in the Pole Vault. It has been a breakthrough season for Brown as this performance follows on from her personal best of 4.32m set at the Welsh Championships on the 1st of June. Brown’s next competition will be the Belfast International Games on 2nd of July followed by the Cork City Sports on July 8th.

Another standout performance from the league came from Jason Harvey (Crusaders AC) at Morton Stadium. Harvey won the 400m hurdles in a time of 50.86 improving on his season’s best time of 51.13. The time more importantly was inside his standard of 51.10 for the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich.

Alongside these two performances, clubs from all over the country battled it out for a place in the final of the national league to be held in Tullamore on the 3rd of August. A full results round up and list of qualifying clubs for the final will be available on the website this evening.

The full Irish Team  for the European Championships will be announced on the 21st of July at a Press Conference after the National Track and Field Championships (19th/20th).  There is an expectation that this team will be made up of over 25 athletes, making it one of the largest Irish teams ever to compete at the championships. With development athletes (those aged 24 and under) expected to form a large continent of the team, this championship will form an integral part of their performance development towards Rio 2016 and beyond.
