Nenagh set to host big weekend of underage track and field competition The indoor arena in Nenagh is the venue on Saturday and Sunday for the AAI juvenile track and field championships. There are a massive 85 events on the menu and hopefully every single competitor will travel home happy with their performances. There are favourites in almost every event, but the favourite does not always win. Ask anyone who followed Cheltenham last week! Last Sunday’s junior championships gave a good insight into just who is in form at the moment. Pride of place there must go to Laura Cogan from Newbridge who won the shot putt with a new Irish record. She competes under 19 this time round. Staying with the shot, Daniel Clifford from Farranfore Maine Valley goes in the under 18 event here and will be all out to add to his junior title. Eoin Hannon from Tullamore Harriers recorded a good double in the junior long jump and 60m hurdles and will attempt the same double next weekend. He also goes in the 60m for good measure. Niamh Whelan from Ferrybank will be a strong fancy in the under 18 60m and 300m, while clubmates Kalyn Sheehan and Jessie Barr are entered in the under19 400m. Ferry bank athletes will, no doubt, travel back to Waterford with a bagful of medals. The under 19 60m events will see Mairead Murphy from Ferrybank and Gerard O’Reilly from Shercock battle for gold in their respective races. Junior titles went the way of Tekea Gebrezgi from Celtic and Robert Fitzsimmons from Tallaght, and they will both be back to contest the under 18 and 19 1,500m races respectively. Orla Finn from Riverstick Kinsale could be the one to watch in the under 16 long and high jumps, while Grainne Moggan from Brothers Pearse will attract a lot of attention in the under18 high jump. Little separated Cathal Owens from Leevale and Finbar Horgan from Clonmel who won silver and bronze respectively in the junior 400m. They meet again in the under 18 400m where they will be joined by Christopher Russell from Ferrybank. Ciaran Kenny from Blarney Inniscarra could well be the one to watch in the under 19 400m. We in Athletics Ireland wish all competitors and officials a rewarding weekend in Nenagh. Timetable and Full Details
