Bori Akinola (UCD AC) has smashed the Irish 60m record this evening at the Belgrade Indoor Meeting in Serbia.
Racing at the World Indoor Tour Gold meet, his debut at this level of competition, Akinola clocked a blistering time of 6.54 seconds to finish in second place behind Dominik Illovszky of Hungary (6.52).
The time takes 0.03 seconds off the previous record which had been held by Israel Olatunde (Tallaght AC) since 2023. Akinola’s previous best of 6.59 was ran in Glasgow less than two weeks ago.
Despite experiencing four false starts, Akinola remained unphased and made a lightning start to the race just getting pipped by Illovszky as they dipped for the line.
The 24-year-old had already ticked off the qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland next month and will continue his build-up to the event in the weeks ahead racing at the 123.ie National Senior Indoor Championships in Dublin on Sunday March 1st.
