Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC) has finished 12th in the final of the Men’s 1500m on Day Five of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Competing in his maiden global final the Dubliner gave a strong account of himself going through 400m in ninth, solidifying that position at 800m, before running slightly out of gas in the closing 100 metres and fading to 12th despite his best efforts.
The 29-year-old who is coached by Helen Clitheroe and based in Manchester was the first Irishman to compete in the 1500m world final since 2011 and crossed the line in a time of 3:35.87.
“I’m a little bit disappointed; I would’ve preferred to finish a little bit higher up,” he told Athletics Ireland afterwards. “It’s my first time into a world final, so there’s a lot of positives to take from it. I ran well in the heats and semi, and I felt quite good there in the final.
“There were 14 guys in that race, so it makes it a bit more tactical, it’s hard to get into position. I felt that if I was a bit higher up with 400m to go I would’ve done better but I just had too much work to do.
“It’s my first time being here and it’s tough to get it right on your first go. Next time round I can really give it a good crack. Everything’s clicking for me at the moment, and I think I did a lot of things right here. Going forward it’s really positive.”
Coscoran also confirmed that he would race again in the heats of the Men’s 5000m on Friday alongside Brian Fay (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Darragh McElhinney (Bantry AC).
“It’s a quick turnaround,” he said. “I’ll rest up and get back in the mix, I’m looking forward to it.”
Tomorrow Mark English (Finn Valley AC) and Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) return to action at the Japan National Stadium for the semi-finals of the Men’s 800m. It is the first time that Ireland have had two men in the semi-finals of the event at a global championship. English will be on track at 1:45pm, with McPhillips racing at 1:53pm. Just the top two in each semi-final and the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers will advance to Saturday’s final.
