Aston on the treble in Athlone

Shane Aston (Trim) delivered a championship best performance to win the senior Irish Life Health Combined Events title for the third year in-a-row in Athlone IT on Saturday with 3,720 points. A great duel was developing with hurdles specialist Gerard O’Donnell (Carrick on Shannon) but a pulled calf muscle attempting 2.04m in the high jump saw him forced out of the competition.

Shane Aston (Trim) recorded a hat-trick of titles at an exciting day of competition at the Irish Life Health National Combined events in Athlone IT (January 19).

Aston delivered a championship best performance to win the senior title for the third year in-a-row with 3,720 points. A great duel was developing with hurdles specialist Gerard O’Donnell (Carrick on Shannon) but a pulled calf muscle attempting 2.04m in the high jump saw him forced out of the competition.

Diarmuid O’Connor (Bandon) and Brian Lynch (Old Abbey) also delivered championship best performances to win respective youth and junior crowns with scores of 3,592 points and 3,418 points.

Laura Frey (Lagan Valley) bagged the senior women’s crown with 3,298 points with Lara O’Byrne (Donore Harriers) continuing her rise up the ranks to win the junior title with 3,307 points. Ava Rochford (Ennis Track) is another who has been making her mark in the multis and won the U15 girls with 3,107 points. Laura Frawley (St Mary’s Limerick) scored well with 3,320 points to win the U16 category.

Emily Waldron (Enniscorthy) was a good winner in the W35 with 2,049 points while Trevor McGlynn (Omagh Harriers) won the M40 with 2,862 points.
