The Beara Peninsula is well travelled indeed by the coaches of Beara AC. The club run Athletic sessions in a number of satellite facilities in the region and on nearby islands, many kindly provided kindly by local GAA clubs. Currently there are 109 juveniles registered through the club with Athletics Ireland. These numbers are credit to the hard work, motivation and dedication of the coaches at Beara AC. Initiatives run by the club include T&F leagues throughout the summer months and a mile challenge training programme preparing athletes for next years SparMileChallenge. Benidicte Coleman (Head Coach) put the success of athletics in the area down to mass participation. The club aims to provide athletic training for all ages and abilities. Benidicte continued to say that the children are exploring different events and are enjoying the multitude of events that athletics provides. Recently the club received grant aid to provide long jump and high jump facilities. The coaches feel with these extra facilities many local athletes will be able to train in event specific conditions and may even produce local, regional and national medals down the road. It is the vision of the Beara AC club members to build upon this recent funding and develop many different training areas around the peninsula for the current and upcoming athletes not only of Beara AC but the whole West Cork region. The Little Athletics initiative is designed to cater for the 5 to 9 year old age group. The programme develops the fundamentals of athletics (RUN-JUMP-THROW) in young athletes which unfortunately is required in an era of game consoles and low physical activity levels. A one day course is provided for parents and coaches, which enables to club to deliver a little athletics programme. Many parents attend this course as they find it an easy avenue to help out the coaches within a club who are often overrun by numerous little athletes and are only delighted with the help of parents.
