Athletics Ireland have selected a team of five athletes to compete at the upcoming European Throwing Cup which will be held in Nicosia, Cyprus on March 14th & 15th.

Leading the team will be Olympian and World Championship finalist Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) who will compete in the Senior Women’s Hammer Throw. The 22-year-old from Cork reached the world final of the event in Tokyo last September and extended her personal best to 71.75m.

Fellow Olympian Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock AC) is entered in the Senior Men’s Shot Put. Favors holds the national record in the event (20.93m, 2024) and just last weekend won gold at the 123.ie National Senior Indoor Championships in a championship record.

Last year’s European Throwing Cup U23 medallist Anna Gavigan (Lambay Sports Academy) returns to Cyprus with high hopes of a repeat podium performance. Also selected are national discus record holder Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock AC) who will travel from her Danish training base and is on target to push out her record even further in 2026, while Ireland’s leading javelin thrower Conor Cusack (Lake District AC) hopes to go beyond his 75m performance from 2025.

Commenting on the selection, Team Leader and Athletics Ireland Field-Event Performance Lead, David Sweeney said:

“This team have prepared exceptionally well for this competition. Athletes have just returned from various training camps in South Africa and Portugal where they were able to fine-tune a lot of their winter training and they all are in good shape technically and physically. This competition is hugely important in itself, but it’s also vital as preparation for those targeting the European Championships in Birmingham later in the summer.”

Athletics Ireland views the European Throwing Cup as a key competition which contributes to the progression of Irish throwers. Athletics Ireland intends to support athlete’s participation at the European Throwing Cup to reflect our aim of improving our standing in the European Team Championships, and to assist in developing throwers who are progressing towards European U20 and U23 Championships, European Championships or Olympic Games qualification.
