Four mile road race Bohermeen athletic club in Co Meath which this year celebrates its 80th founding . Will on Sunday next September 9th bring down the curtain on the Meath road racing season ,when the promote the 35th Rennicks cup over 4 miles and the 32nd Fr Delany cup also over 4 miles .Starting sharp at 2pm with a combined start for men and ladies the event is open to all level of athletes regardless of age or ability .as long as they can complete the 4 mile distance . Entries will close at 1-30pm at Bohermeen community centre which is race headquarters . The event has a long and distinguished history stretching back to February 1972 when athletes raced over 6 miles cross country, the first winner was Mick Johnstown from Grangebellew Co Louth . The Rennicks cup which is a smaller version of the Sam Maguire was presented to the club by Arthur ( Attie ) Rennicks well known dog trainer and stone sculptor for the benefit of developing the club at the time . The Fr Delany cup was first run in 1975 when Dolores Wallace from Meath became the first winner . The Fr Delany cup is now a memorial to the later Fr Delany who was parish priest of the parish for 19 years Today the event is run on the roads since 2001 when the foot and mouth epidemic caused the event to go a new direction and very successfully. On Sunday a large turnout is expected from all local Meath clubs as it is the final round of the Meath road league . It’s the last chance to race over Meath roads before the winter cross country season commences in 3 weeks . All the countys best athletes are expected to be on Bohermeen roads on Sunday .Those in training for the marathon can use the Bohermeen run for a very welcome blow out. There is a wide range of awards to attract all levels which is aimed at mass participation and the first 150 athletes to register will receive a commemorative t shirt ,as usual all visitors will be well looked after with changing facilities showers and refreshments . The main programe will be preceded by a juvenile track warm up meet for children at 11-30am sharp with runs for all ages from 5-15 with the longest run under 15 at 800mts ,in all runs there are prizes for the first 3 and points will be awarded to the top six in each run .The overall club will receive the Rogers perpetual cup ..
