Championship action heads to the roads this weekend as the national 5k championships take centre stage in the Phoenix Park (May 17th). National honours will once again be up for grabs as over 700 athletes battle it out in the championship race which takes place in conjunction with the Biofreeze Irish Runner 5k which is set for a 9.30am start on Chesterfield Avenue.
Fresh off his stellar victory at last year’s event, Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock AC) looks set to defend his title in a stacked looking men’s race Kelly took gold in last year’s race in 14:30, a time that will likely need bettering once again if he is to take the title home to Raheny.
Leading contenders for the senior men’s title could include 2023 champion Pierre Murchan (Dublin City Harriers) who looks to be in flying form in recent weeks. Emmett Jennings (Dundrum South Dublin) and Sean McGinley (Finn Valley AC) have tasted national success in recent years and will be right there once more if taking to the start-line. Galway athlete William Fitzgerald (Craughwell AC) ran his way onto the podium twelve month ago and can’t be discounted.
The women’s race looks set to have a new champion in the absence of Finn Valley’s Amy Greene who was hugely impressive in taking gold in 2024. Meghan Ryan (Dundrum South Dublin) has course form having taken the 5-mile title in the Park back in 2023 and could be the one to catch. Expect strong showings from Celine Gavin (Dublin City Harriers), Nakita Burke (Letterkenny AC), and Catherina Mullen (MSB). Roisin O’Reilly (UCD AC) was third last year and will be looking to climb onto the podium once more.
Team glory will also be up for grabs, with Clonliffe Harriers (men) and DMP AC (women) seeking to defend their 2024 titles.
Final entries close Friday May 16th at 12.00 noon. Preview based on those entered at time of writing.
