Celebrating a Historic Night in Irish Athletics

16 August 2025

On August 17th 1985, four of Ireland’s greatest middle-distance runners – Eamonn Coghlan, Frank O’Mara, Marcus O’Sullivan, and Ray Flynn, came together for a world record attempt in the 4×1 mile relay at Belfield. The event, driven by GOAL founder John O’Shea and supported by Noel Carroll, aimed to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia.

Despite injuries and tight schedules, the athletes delivered an unforgettable performance, clocking a combined time of 15:49.08 to shatter the previous world record. Over 8,000 spectators packed the track, and more than £25,000 was raised on the night.

Here’s a breakdown of the record:

  • Team: Eamonn Coghlan, Marcus O’Sullivan, Frank O’Mara, and Ray Flynn.
  • Date: August 17, 1985.
  • Location: Belfield. Dublin, Ireland.
  • Time: 15:49.08.
  • Average mile time: Approximately 3:57.3 per runner.

The record has stood for 40 years and is still recognised as the world’s best time in the 4 x 1 mile relay.
