World Youths, European Under 23, Woodie's DIY Juvenile As the European U23 championships draw to an end there was disappointment yesterday as Andrew Ledwith, no doubt feeling the effects of his American season, finished 19th in the 10,000m. Sharon Heveran was 10th in the high jump with a season's best of 1.82m Rose Ann Galligan, another athlete after a long American season, joins Linda Byrne in the final of the 1,500m later today. At the World Youths championships everything that could go wrong did go wrong as he failed to register a mark in his discus qualifying group And there was more bad news as Alistair Cragg dropped ot of the 5,000m in Rome on Friday night. David Gillick was eight in the 400m in 45.81, someway off his Irish record. At the Woodie's DIY uvenile championships at Tullamore there was a string of outstanding perofrmances, punctuated by some heavy downpours during the day. Jason Harvey from Campbell College set a new championship best when winning the under 17 high jump with 2.01 and also added the 100m hurdles in 13.74. Christopher Russell lowered his PB in the under 18 100m, winning in a legal 10.89. Ferrybank clubmate Niamh Whelan was an impressive winner of her 100m in a legal 12.10. Timmy Harrington from Bandon jumped 6.39m at his final attempt to win the under 17 long jump, just ahead of long time leader Paul Smith from Shercock with 6.36m. The under 19 walk was a very close affair with Laura Reynolds from Mohill just getting the better of Donna Carolan from Inbhear Dee. Noel Collins from Omagh recorded a good win in the under 18 steeplechase in 6:06.68 from Tomas Cotter of Dunleer in 6:09.48. Patrick Maher from Leevale put in he perfect performance to race away with the under 16 100m hurdles in 13.69, while Ciaran O'Cathain from Roscommon was a good winner of the under 19 110m hurdles. Michael Hynes from Raheny continued his excelent form to win the under 19 100m in a legal 10.95. Mairead Murphy from Ferrybank set a new championship best in the under 19 100m hurdles, winning in 14.42. She made it a double when she won the 100m in a legal 12.38. Full results later today.
