The Cork City Marathon, which was last held in 1986, makes a comeback this year. The Montenotte Hotel Cork City Marathon will take place on Monday, June 4th. The event, which will incorporate both the Cork County and Munster Marathon Championships, has already attracted a big entry, among those entered is Alan O’Shea of Bantry athletic club, winner of the Ballycotton 10. Many athletes are running for charity and it is expected up to half a million will be raised for various charities. The Cork City Marathon will also include a relay event, the first time a marathon relay has been run in the country. Teams of up to five can take part in the relay with each member running just over 5 miles, an ideal challenge for sports teams or anybody who is looking to get involved in a healthy activity. The closing date for entries is May 11th and full details are available on www.corkcitymarathon.ie. The event itself will require plenty of help and the organisers are appealing for volunteers. Volunteers who assist on the day will be given lunch and goody bag. For further information about participating in the marathon or volunteering contact: 021 4924170 or email info@corkcitymarathon.ie. The event is being organised in partnership with the Cork County Board of the Athletics Association of Ireland and the Cork Business Houses Athletic Association. Anybody looking for help with their training or details of upcoming road races will find them on www.corkathletics.org or www.corkbhaa.com.
