Council is also proposing that the European Athletics Championships shall be held every even year Elections and Competition re-structure the main focus for Congress in Cannes The election of the President, two vice presidents, and 13 Council members along with the competition re-structure debate are the central themes for the 20th European Athletics Congress taking places in Cannes (FRA) on Saturday, April 14th. Among the proposals to the 50 Member Federations will be the Council proposal that The European Athletics Team Championships will replace the European Cup and be organised for national teams comprising both genders (therefore there would be one team and one team score per federation). In short, the participating teams would be divided into three levels: the Super League, with 12 (twelve) teams, the First League with 12 (twelve) teams and the Second League, with the remaining teams divided into two groups. There would be a promotion/relegation system (three teams between Super League and First League and two teams between First League and Second League). If accepted, the format would be further developed, and would include more head to head competition, in order to make the event more attractive. The proposed amendment would come into effect for the 2009 season, at the earliest. The Council is also proposing that the European Athletics Championships shall be held every even year, subject to approval from the European Broadcasting Union and the marketing partners. The current President of European Athletics, Hansjörg Wirz from Switzerland, is unopposed as is the sitting Treasurer Karel Pilny, from the Czech Republic.
