Day 1 Delivers Thrills as Ireland’s Rising Stars Shine Bright in Tullamore

Ireland’s brightest young athletes lit up Tullamore on Day 1 of the 123.ie National Juvenile Track and Field Championships, kicking off an exciting three-days of action-packed athletics at the Offaly venue (28th Jun).

Selected Track Highlights

3000m Races

  • Girls U19: Dearbhla Allen (St. Peter’s AC) clocked 9:50.03, narrowly missing the 2022 Championship Record (9:49.30 – Hannah Kehoe, Thomastown AC).
  • Boys U18: Lorcan Forde Dunne (Ace AC) was ultra impressive, clocking the fastest time of 8:36.63 performance.
  • Girls U17: Abby Smith (Shercock AC) stormed to a CR of 10:00.21, ahead of Kayla Devine (Moy Valley AC) in 10:03.39—both under the previous record of 10:05.49 set by Annabel Morrison back in 2022.
  • Girls U16: Freya Renton (Westport AC) set a new Championship Record of 9:44.00, breaking the previous mark of 9:46.01 (Emily Bolton, 2023). Sister Holly crossed in second place in 9.58.5 to seal a Renton 1 – 2 on the podium.
  • Ruby Devereaux (Youghal AC) also rewrote the record books in the U16 Boys 3000m, clocking a blistering 8:53.86 to break the Championship Record of 9:00.08, set by Charlie O’Neill (Donore Harriers A.C.) in 2024

Sprint Events

  • Boys U19 100m: Ciaran O’Farrell (Donore Harriers) won in 10.98, edging out Lemar Lucciano (West Coast AC), second in 11.09.
  • Girls U19 100m: Alisha Maher (Tullamore Harriers AC) secured victory in a stacked final in 12.31, followed by Katie Doherty (Ratoath AC) in 12.36.
  • Girls U18 100m: Angela Cielecka (West Coast AC) was hugely impressive in the U18 final, powering to gold in 12.22.
  • Boys U18 100m: Dubem Amah (Tallaght AC) clocked a blistering 10.89 for the win.
  • Girls U17 100m: Tiffany Nwaedozie (Belgooly AC) clinched gold in 12.11 for on of the stand-out performances of the day.
  • Boys U16 100m: Joseph Magbagbeola (Ratoath AC) continues the Ratoath sprinting rise to take gold in 11.09.

400m Finals

  • Girls U19: Sophie Walker (Newport AC) took the title in 58.38., while in the Boys U19 it was Alex Leonard (Donore Harriers) who delivered a smooth finish to take gold in 49.97.
  • Girls U18: Róisín Murray (Bray Runners AC) took top honours with 57.12 to continue Bray Runners sprint revival, while the Boys U18 went to Ciaran Brosnan (An Ríocht AC) who impressed with 49.33.

Walk Events

  • Girls U18 3000m Walk: Robin Og Murphy (Longford AC) emerged victorious in the U18 Girls 3000m, crossing in 15:18.56.

Field Event Standouts

Throws

  • Boys U18 Hammer: Thomas Williams (Shercock AC) threw 71.67m, just shy of the 2014 CR (71.90m – Adam King, Iveragh AC).
  • Girls U19 Discus: Cara Wright (Crookstown Millview AC) led the field with a throw of 37.80m, ahead of Caoimhe Gallen (Lifford Strabane AC, 34.54m).

Jumps

  • Girls U18 Pole Vault: Maebh Corkery (Midleton AC) took gold with a clearance of 3.30m.
  • Boys U18 Long Jump: Ryan Onoh (Leevale AC) leapt 6.91m, just missing the 2006 CR of 6.93m (Eoin Hannon, Tullamore Harriers).
  • Girls U16 Triple Jump: Milana Sharhayeu (Ratoath AC) dazzled with a new Championship Record of 11.45m.

What’s Next?

Day 2 of the championships continues tomorrow, Sunday, June 29, with more national finals on the schedule. The action will include hurdles, steeplechase, and middle-distance races, alongside more field excitement.
