The National 10 Mile titles are down for decision this weekend, with a bumper entry heading for the Phoenix Park on Sunday for the Biofreeze Irish Runner 10 Mile which gets underway from 9am (July 20th).
Almost 2,500 athletes will take on the 10-mile route around the iconic park surroundings, with many looking to support their club’s pursuit of national honours.
It looks like we will have new champions crowned in the senior races in the absence of last year’s winners Keelan Kilrehill (Moy Valley AC) and Grace Lynch (Dundrum South Dublin). There will be no shortage of quality athletes on show however, with both the men’s and women’s races looking ultra-competitive.
The race for team titles should also gather much attention on the day, with Dundrum South Dublin AC looking to complete the clean sweep of senior road titles in the Phoenix Park having already taken victory in both the men’s and women’s 5k and 5 mile senior team championships.
Senior Men
The men’s race will see the return of Emmet Jennings (Dundrum South Dublin) and Kane Collins (Donore Harriers) who led home the field in first and second place respectively at the national 5 mile just three weeks previous. Jennings raced patiently on that occasion and has the tactical speed to make any break from the field count when he goes for home.
Gerry Forde (Kilkenny City Harriers) returns following his second-place finish in this race 12 months previous, while Jake O’Regan (St John’s AC) and Ian Guiden (Clonliffe Harriers) both boast course form.
The marathon athletes are slowly ramping up preparations for October and few will rule out the chances of Leevale’s Ryan Creech who won’t be the only Corkonian travelling up to Dublin this weekend.
Clane AC claimed the senior men’s team title in 2024 and could yet look to declare a full team in their defence of the title. Raheny Shamrock AC look to have a strong entry, along with local club Donor Harriers who should also be right in contention come Sunday morning.
Senior Women
The women’s race should be just as compelling with some last-minute entries likely to dictate much of Sunday’s proceedings. Niamh Allen (Leevale AC) looks a standout entry following her huge PB of 8:51.08 over 3000m to move to 8th on the Irish all-time list at the Cork City Sports last week. Allen has proven stamina over cross country and the half marathon distance which will make her hard to beat.
Meghan Ryan (Dundrum South Dublin) won this title back in 2023 and can’t be discounted having made the podium in this year’s 5 mile (3rd). Ryan’s 2023 winning time of 58:03 will likely need to be bettered again come Sunday if she is to regain the title, while she can also be relied upon to lead the DSD charge in pursuit of the team title.
Raheny come into the weekend as the defending team champions in the senior women’s race and could once again to be pushed for the podium places by Donore Harriers and Dunboyne AC as they bid to stop DSD making it three from three on the roads in 2025.
