SPAR Sponsorship in Europe - SPAR Mile Challenge - European Cross Country - European Athlete of the Month - More Results European Athletics and SPAR International are pleased to announce that the world’s largest voluntary food retail chain has extended its commitment to athletics for a further four year period, until the end of 2011. SPAR International has been the principal sponsor of European Athletics since 1996. The new contract will commence on January 1 2008 and runs until the end of 2011, incorporating the following European Athletics events: - European Athletics Championships 2010. - European Athletics Indoor Championships 2009 and 2011. - SPAR European Cup annually. - SPAR European Cross Country Championships annually. - European Athletics Indoor Cup 2008 and 2010. Here in Ireland the involvement of SPAR in Irish athletics is growing all the time and is very much appreciated. Just last week Cork City Sports launched this year’s meet and welcomed on board SPAR as one of the three main sponsors. Both Derval O’Rourke and David Gillick were present at the launch and both benefit from the generous sponsorship of SPAR. Cork City Sports take place on Saturday 30th June. Hot on the heels of Cork City Sports the SPAR Mile Challenge takes place on 7th July. This is a huge venture and will afford budding milers of all ages and abilities to show what they can do over the classic distance. There are 28 venues around the country and full details are available by clicking on the SPAR Logo. SPAR LOGO European Athletics has also announced that three cities have applied to host the 2009 European cross country championships, Bydgoszcz in Poland, Carcassonne in France and Dublin. A lot of effort and time has already gone into the preparation of the Athletics Ireland bid, with Santry Demesne being put forward due to it’s closeness to the airport and the large number of top class hotels in the general area. Meanwhile, voting for the European Athlete of the Month of May closes at 11am Tuesday. Ireland’s Alistair Cragg is amongst the nominees thanks to two marvellous performances that rank him number 1 in Europe. During May he clocked 3:36.18 for 1,500m and 27:39.55 for 10,000m.
