Exciting day of competition in store at GloHealth Masters

The GloHealth National Masters Track and Field Championships rounds out what has been an exciting domestic programme on Sunday in Tullamore (August 21st).

There is another big entry for the Masters this weekend with a good blend of healthy competition and camaraderie in store.

Ger Cremin (An Riocht) O35 is one of the leading sprint entrants is listed for the 100m and 110m hurdles  while Paula Reilly (Celbridge) and John Corr (Leevale) should feature in their respective O45 200m races.

Some of the leading entrants in the women’s middle distance events include: Kelly Neely (City of Lisburn) O35 800m; Niamh Fitzgerald (Lucan Harriers) O40 800m; Joy McAleer (City of Lisburn) O50 800m; Denise Toner (Clones) O35 1500m/3,000m; and Niamh O’Sullivan (An Riocht) O50 3,000m.

Neely has had another fine season and will be looking to finish that off with gold in the O35 women’s 800m while also coaching Joy McAleer in the O50 800m.

The men’s middle distance races include: Denis Coughlan (St Finbarr’s) O40 800m/1500m; Rathfarnham’s Paul Fleming and Barry Minnock O40 1500m; Brian Lynch (North East Runners Dundalk) O60 1500m; Joe Conway (unattached) in the O45 800m and 1500m; Matt Slattery (Clonliffe Harriers) O60 800m.

Fleming is also listed for the O40 800m while Minnock is more famed for his marathon pb of 2:17. Sub 4 minute miler Joe Conway is an interesting entry in the O45 age category while Brian Lynch has impressed domestically and internationally. Matt Slattery starred in the championships last year winning a hatful of medals.

Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers) was another to star in the master last year and the national senior shot put indoor record holder is listed for that event and the discus in the O35 category. Mary Barrett (Loughrea) is one of the leading female throwers and is in the O55 discus.

Evergreen Patrick Naughton (Nenagh) O80 and Hugh Gallagher (Milford) O90 return once more to compete in a variety of events in what should be another action-packed day.
