Fearghal Curtin (Youghal AC) has smashed the Irish marathon record in South Korea.
Racing overnight at the Gyeongju International Marathon the 27-year-old clocked a time of 2:07:54 to take an emphatic victory in the race. The time takes over ninety seconds off the previous record which had been held by Peter Lynch (2:09:36) since April.
In what was only Curtin’s second ever marathon the Cork man ran a negatively split race, going through 20km in 61:34 and 30km in 1:31:33, picking his pace up as the race progressed.
It continues what has been a terrific 2025 for Curtin. Just last month in Copenhagen he broke the Irish half marathon record by clocking 60:22 to finish eighth. In his debut marathon in Düsseldorf back in April he ran 2:11:35 to finish fourth.
Now based in Portugal, Curtin will now turn his attention to the Singapore Marathon in early December.
