Feast of juvenile athletics to take centre stage

26 June 2025

Ireland’s next generation of athletics stars return to Tullamore this weekend for the first two days of what promises to be an exciting feast of athletics action at the 123.ie National Juvenile Track and Field Championships which take place across June 28th, 29th, and July 12th.

Athletics fans can look forward to enthralling head-to-heads, battles for national titles, and the emergence of new stars as hundreds of talented young athletes from across the country descend on Tullamore.

Key Information:

Several events look to have a wide open feel with a host of familiar juvenile athletes also travelling to represent Ireland as part of a 30-strong team which have set off to Manheim, Germany  for the Junioren-Gala.

Day 1 – Saturday, June 28th
Kicking off from 10am, Day 2 opens with track action in the 3,000m as well as a host of events in the field including the discus, hammer, shot put, javelin, and jumps competitions.

Expect strong showings in the 3000s from Emily Bolton (Clonliffe Harriers) and Emer McKee (Willowfield Harriers) in the U18 race, while Freya Renton (Westport AC) returns to action once again in the U16 race. Matei Ursachi (Clonliffe Harriers) is a consistent performer and should be right there in the U19 race, while the 3000m race of the day could well be the Boys U18 race where a host of impressive athletes including Odhran McBrearty (Finn Valley AC), Noah Watt (Loughview AC), and Harry McKenzie (Enniskillen AC) are set to take to the start line, to name but a few.

Heats of the 400m are up next where even in the absence of those travelling to Germany, there should be some quality races on show. Freya Bateman (Belgooly AC) took to 400m title indoors earlier this year and is one to look out for in the U17 race should she progress through the heats.

The short sprinters will take to the blocks next with the heats of the 80m and 100m set to start from 1pm. Lemar Lucciano (West Coast AC) should be right there in the final of the Boys U19 race, while Katie Doherty (Ratoath AC) will look to add to her growing collection of national titles in the U19 Girls.

The walks are set to take to the start-line from 3.30pm where all eyes will be on Matthew Newell (Tuam AC) in the U18 5000m following his championship record indoors. Robin Og Murphy (Longford AC) and Savanagh O’Callaghan (Tuam AC) will look to duke it out in the U18 3000mW final.

There will be no shortage of star power in the field events with Thomas Williams (Shercock AC) set to enter the cage at 2pm for the U18 hammer competition, while Caoimhe Gallen (Lifford Strabane) will have a busy few days with entries in the discus, hammer, and javelin.

Patience Chinda (St Michaels AC) will have an early start in the U19 triple jump competition and will be tough to beat on current form, while Maebh Corkery (Midelton AC) set an indoor CR earlier this season and should get the crowd on their feet in the U18 pole vault competition later in the afternoon.

Day 2 – Sunday, June 29th
Sunday’s action opens over the hurdles with another blitz of field events also enjoying an early start. Cameron McCracken (North Down AC) is one not to miss in the U18 110m hurdles, where he could be joined by jumps specialist Conor Penney (Craughwell AC).

The 600m and 800m should present their customary fill of excitement with stacked fields set to take to the Tullamore track. Caolan McFadden (Cranford AC) has looked imperious this season and once again will be tough to pass in the U19 race where he’ll be joined by Liam Morris (Donore Harriers) who could be one of the closest contenders. Jennifer O’Leary (Nenagh Olympic) has produced some impressive performances already this season and could be the one in her respective U19 race.

Away from the senior races, Darragh Whelan (Limerick AC) is one to mention following his breathtaking indoor championship performance earlier in the year. He’ll return for a tilt at the U15 800m title on Sunday.

The steeplechases will be the penultimate track finals of the day with athletes taking to their marks from 2.30pm on Sunday. The fields look wide up, with Dearbhla Allen (St Peters AC) one to look out for in the Girls U19 race.

The field eventers will be out in force on Sunday once more with the star attraction likely to be in the form of Michael Kent (DMP AC) who will be looking to add the U19 pole vault title to his senior indoor and schools titles from earlier in the year.

Athletics Ireland would like to wish all those competing the best of luck across all competition days. A preview for Day 3 (July 12th) will be release closer to the event date.
