Future Stars Set to Shine in Athlone

The GloHealth National Juvenile Indoor Championships take place this weekend (21st and 22nd of March) in AIT International Arena, Athlone. There is a packed programme of events, which will see over 1,500 of Ireland’s young athletic talent take to the boards in Athlone. All athletes competing over the weekend have qualified through from the five regional finals (Dublin, Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht) to reach the prestigious GloHealth All-Ireland Finals. Day two of the championships will be streamed live via Athletics Ireland TV with commentary courtesy of Jumping the Gun.

Day 1

The relay events take centre stage on day one of the championships with clubs from all five regions battling it out for the various national titles. The U12 and U13 age categories will contest the 4x100m events while the U14-U19’s go in the 4x200m relays, an action packed day of competition guaranteed.

High Jump & Shot Putt

U16 athlete Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley AC) has cleared 1.75m in the high jump which came at the British U17 championships in Sheffield on the 1st of March. Multi-eventer Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC) will hone her high jumping skills as she starts as favourite in the U18 competition.

Keith Marks (Cushinstown AC) tops the juvenile rankings with his 2.06m jump at the Leinster Juvenile Indoor Championships on the 7th of March. Anu Awonusi (St Laurence O’Toole AC) who has thrown over 15m in the shot putt this year will start as favourite in the U19 event while Ann Marie Torsney (Fingallians AC) is another of those to watch out for in the shot putt circle.

Day 2

Many of Ireland’s quickest underage sprinters will be on their marks as day two of the championships features the 60m sprints. Tallaght AC due Eoin Doherty and Joseph Ojemumi have dipped under seven seconds this year for the 60m. Both athletes will resume rivalry in the U19 60m with Leinster champion Rory Martin (Tullamore Harriers AC) another athlete to watch out for.

Ciara Neville (Emerald AC) who ran a stunning 7.45 seconds for the 60m at the Irish Senior Championships in February goes in the U17 event in Athlone. Hurdle specialist Molly Scott (St. Laurence O’Toole AC) has run a quick 7.58 seconds this year is a likely challenger to Neville. The longer 400m sprint is also on the programme where the likes of Jenna Bromell (Emerald AC) and Brian Masterson (Dundrum South Dublin AC) are tipped to go well.

1500m

Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) who is in her final year as a juvenile (U19) contests the 1,500m event in Athlone. Another rising middle distance star set to feature on Sunday is Kevin McGrath (Bohermeen AC) in the U17 age category. The boy’s U19 event features many of the leading names from the schools cross country season as Peter Lynch (Kilkenny City Harriers AC), Jack O’Leary (Mullingar Harriers AC) and Pierre Murchan (Celtic AC) swap the mud for the indoor track.
