GloHealth CE Championships and National League Final Preview

Another weekend of action packed athletics is fast approaching with the GloHealth Combined Events Championships taking place on the 2nd and 3rd of August and the National League Final taking place on the 3rd of August. Tullamore Harriers Stadium is the venue for both championships guaranteeing an exciting couple of days of athletics.

Combined Events Championships

Ireland’s very best multi eventers will battle it out for the GloHealth National Titles with athletes competing in juvenile, junior, senior and master competitions. The senior men’s Decathlon Event is set to be a three way battle between Michael Bowler (Kilkenny City Harriers AC), Shane Aston (Trim AC) and Kourosh Foroughi (Star of the Sea AC).

All three athletes are fresh from representing Ireland at the European Combined Event Cup in Madeira Portugal on the 5th/6th of July. On that occasion Bowler (6,997), Aston (6,449) and Foroughi (6,395) scored personal bests with Bowler finishing best of the Irish in third place overall.

Defending champion and current Irish Heptathlon Record Holder Kelly Proper (Ferrybank AC) is competing at the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich leaving the door open for a new champion in the senior women’s heptathlon. Laura Frey (Lagan Valley AC) and Karen Dunne (Bohermeen AC) will battle it out for the national title. At junior level Mark Rogers (St. Peter’s AC) and Amy McTeggart (Boyne AC) are likely to go well.

Entry List

Youth/Juvenile

Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC) is the standout name in the youth girl’s category in a year where she has won numerous national individual titles and set youth records in the 60m Hurdles and High Jump. The competition for the youth boy’s title is set to be a much closer affair with Keith Mark (Cushinstown AC), Ethan Bannon (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Tim Bowler (Enniscorthy AC) all in the mix.

Daniel Ryan (Moycarkey and Coolcroo AC) – U16, Ciara Deely (Kilkenny City Harriers AC) – U15, Sophie Meredith (St Mary’s Limerick AC) – U14 and Shannon Sheehy (Cushinstown AC) – U16 are all expected to go well in their respective age groups.

GloHealth National League Final

After two rounds of qualification the GloHealth National League Final takes place on Sunday, 3rd of August. The top eight clubs from both the premier and division one categories will battle it out in Tullamore to be named Ireland’s best outdoor track and field club in 2014. Defending premier women’s champions Dundrum South Dublin AC are back to defend their title where they can expect a strong challenge from Cork club Leevale AC. Defending men’s champions Crusaders AC failed to make it through to the final leaving the likes of Clonliffe Harriers AC, Leevale AC, North Down AC and St Abbans AC to battle it out for the title.

Meath Athletics women’s team and Nenagh Olympic AC men’s team amassed the most amounts of points in the division one qualification. However with all eight teams starting from scratch in Tullamore it’s all to play for on Sunday.
