How many times have we seen that banner headline in the past? John Coghlan Wins Senior TitleJohn Coghlan Wins Senior Title This time it was different. This time it was John Coghlan who today put the family name on the senior title at the KitKat All Ireland schools cross country championships in DCU. But he did have to fight all the way to achieve it. A sunny windy day was spoiled during the senior race with a downpour that sent spectators dashing for shelter. Underfoot conditions were firm, with an occasional patch of mud thrown in to spice things up. By halfway the two principals in the race had the lead to themselves as Coghlan and Craig Murphy battled shoulder to shoulder in the lead. Coghlan, a year older than his Cork rival, made several attempts to break away, but Murphy was having none of it, fighting back to level terms every time. The pair was inseparable as they entered the final 800m and the long haul to the finish. On the ‘crown’ of the bend Murphy gave it everything as he tried to pass Coghlan, but the six footer showed great strength and he powered his way back into the lead, a lead he maintained the length of the finishing straight for a famous win. His father did win an All Ireland schools intermediate cross country title back in 1969, but had to settle for second when he raced at senior level. This is John Coghlan’s second All Ireland gold, having won an intermediate 1,500m on the track two years ago (most people will remember the blue hair he sported that day!). The Coghlans come from the school that firmly believe that young athletes should not overdo the mileage and John has shown that 40 miles a week is more than enough for any teen to reach the top. The secret is consistency. At 40 miles a week it takes a little longer to reach the top, but the reward is an injury free spell of training and the absolute satisfaction of success at the end of it. Will the young Coghlan head Stateside? Well, right now he has no offers from that side of the world so the question remains unanswered. Suzanne Huet had a very impressive win in the senior girls race from Ruth Gillespie and the Ffrench O’Carroll twins Charlotte and Rebecca. The intermediate races saw two convincing wins from Eimear Black and Noel Collins, while the junior races saw good wins by Mary Jones and Shane Quinn.
