Ciaran O’Connell makes a return to competition The first of the eight meeting series of graded meetings organised by Dublin Athletics Board got underway in cool conditions in Morton Stadium. Gerard O’Reilly of Shercock got his sprinting season underway with a smooth 11.34 in the 100 metres. Glaslough’s Ciaran O’Connell made a return to competition clocking 50.58 in the 400 and the former 800 metres national champion looked like a man who will run faster as the season progresses. Colm Rooney was a gun to tape winner of the 1500 in 3m58.34 and with more serious opposition which he should encounter in the forthcoming development races could re emerge as the formidable runner that he showed promise of a few years ago. Drogheda’s and District’s Simon Ryan was a fluent winner of the “B” race in 4m15.83. His clubmate Robert Maher won the “C” equivalent and Liffey Valley’s Ray Boyle running his first ever track race won the “D” race. Anthony McCreary cleared 4m40 to win a well supported Pole Vault event with Brendan Bourke winning the shot putt with 11.53. The Limerick man had a busy evening starting with the 100m where he finished third a position he also occupied in the discus, A return to the Decathlon where he showed some great promise a few years ago could be on the cards for later in the season. Donore’s Fiona Mahon edged out Bernie White in the 1500 metres after being overtaken in the straight by the Sportworld runner. Philipa Conway had a hammer and discus double with Clare McGlynn successful over 400 metres.
