Smyth shines at Leinsters

Smyth shines on day of records

Mark Smyth swooped to the senior boys' 100m and 200m titles on day 2 of the Irish Life Health Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships at Morton Stadium today.

In the middle distance Rose Finnegan (Eureka Kells) won the senior girls’ 800m in 2:16.52 while Sarah Healy (Holy Child Killiney) was a commanding winner in the intermediate girls’ 1500m in 4:50.65. Jodie McCann (Inst of Education) was equally impressive in the senior girls’ 1500m in 4:42.51. Bobby Crowley (Knockbeg) impressed in the senior boys’ 1500m with a 56 second last lap to win in 4:00.76.

In the throws multi-eventer Kate O'Connor St Vincent's Dundalk won the intermediate girls’ shot put in 13.28m and broke the record in the javelin with 42.29m.

Niamh Fogarty (St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge) won the senior girls’ shot with a new record of 13.10m with her brother Conor Fogarty (St Joesph’s Rochfordbridge) winning the intermediate boys shot put with 13.45m. She also won the senior girls’ discus with 44.34m.

Grace Furlong (CBS New Ross) won the senior girls’ triple jump in a new record of 11.63m. She also won the long jump with 5.37m. Ruby Millet (Kilkenny College) won the intermediate girls’ long jump with a new record jump of 5.74m. She also won the high jump with 1.65m.

Ciaran Carthy (St Michael’s College) completed a strong double in the intermediate boys’ 400m hurdles in 58.61 and 400m in 50.95.

Mark Smyth (St Fintan’s) was in sparkling form winning the senior boys’ 100m in 10.97, just ahead of David McDonald (CBS Wexford) in 10.99, and the 200m in 21.73. 

Jamie Pender (Carlow VS) won the senior boys’ 400m in a swift 48.33 while Ciara Deeley (Loreto Kilkenny) held off Mollie O’Reilly (Loreto Dalkey) in a lactic death march into a headwind to get over the finish line in 55.83 to 56.15.
