It is with deep sadness that the Irish Schools Athletic Association and Athletics Ireland have learned of the passing of Rory Friel of Cluain Na Mara, Omeath, and formerly of Newry and Dublin. Rory passed away peacefully at the residence of his daughter Nicola on Thursday, 11th September 2025.
Rory was a dedicated and passionate figure in Irish athletics with a lifelong commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting school sport. His service included:
- Teacher and coach at St Colman’s College, Newry
- Executive member of the Ulster Secondary Schools Athletic Association
- International Competitions Director for the Irish Schools Athletic Association
- Former ISAA representative on the Athletics Ireland Board
- Former Chairperson of the Schools International Athletic Board
These roles represent just a fraction of his immense contribution to the sport.
Rory’s impact on athletics in Ireland and particularly school athletics is immeasurable. His dedication, leadership, and warmth touched the lives of countless athletes, coaches, and colleagues. He will be remembered with great affection and immense respect by all who had the privilege to know him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Rory’s family, friends, and the wider sporting community during this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Rory. You will be deeply missed by all in the Irish Schools athletics family and beyond.
