IRISH TRIO SET FOR WORLD RACE WALKING TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BRASILIA

8 April 2026

Seamus Clarke

Three Irish walkers are set to compete in the Men’s U20 10km at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Brasilia, Brazil on Saturday.

Séamus Clarke (Moy Valley AC), John Glennon (Mullingar Harriers) and Matthew Newell (Castlegar AC) will be in action from 7:15am local time (11:15am Irish Time), with the event due to be streamed on the Eurovision Sport platform HERE.

Clarke has been in terrific form so far in 2026 breaking the Irish U20 5000m and 10km Race Walk records. The 19-year-old Mayo man, who is in his first year studying at the University of Limerick, clocked a time of 20:33.19 for 5000m at the 123.ie National Senior Indoor Championships last month, before travelling to Dudince, Slovakia the following week recording a time of 42:06 for 10km on the roads. He has also already achieved the qualification standard for this summer’s World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Glennon, who is currently studying for his Leaving Certificate, is in the form of his life this year. The 18-year-old qualified for this event by posting a time of 43:40.41 just over two weeks ago at the Austrian Open Race Walking Championship.

Newell, who is still 17, has already accumulated significant international experience having represented Ireland at the European Athletics U18 Championships (where Clarke medalled) in 2024 and last year’s European Youth Olympic Festival. He walked to a 21:14.81 personal best indoors over 5000m in March, before completing the 10km distance in a personal best of 44:36 in Dudince.

Athletics Ireland wish the athletes and team support staff the very best of luck.
