Some athletes who starred at the GloHealth All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships in Sligo last week have a quick turnaround from the mud to the boards while others will look to continue their specialised season.
Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown) has starred this indoor season and she could bag a hat-trick of gold medals as she is entered for the U19 high jump, long jump and 60m hurdles. Morland set a national junior pentathlon record of 4043 points. She has bests this season of 1.76m for the high jump, 5.74m in the long jump and 8.39 seconds for the 60m hurdles.
Morland’s Cushinstown AC teammate, Shannon Sheehy, is entered in the same three disciplines in the U18 age category. She should face stiff competition in the long jump from Finn Valley’s multi-talented stars Janine Boyle and Arlene Crossan.
Boyle is entered in the 60m also which should prove exciting with Ciara Neville (Emerald) and Molly Scott (St Laurence O’Toole) among the lead entrants.
Louis O’Loughlin (Donore Harriers) is one of the athletes who will be looking to transfer his dominance from the cross country to the track. O’Loughlin, a clear winner in Sligo in the junior boys, is down the U16 800m and 1500m. Clare’s Darragh Miniter (St Mary’s AC) contests the U16 60m, 200m and shot put.
Adam Fitzpatrick (Kilkenny City Harriers) timed his run to perfection to win the intermediate boys’ last week and he is in the U17 middle distance races. The 800m could prove to be one of the races of the day with Mark Milner (Tullamore Harriers) and Aaron McGlynn (Finn Valley) in the line-up.
Aaron Sexton (North Down) will look to impress in the U17 60m and 200m while Shola Edodo (Templeogue) and Jamie Mitchell (Emerald) are among those in the U18 200m.
Other stars in the U18 section are Kevin McGrath (Bohermeen) in the 800m and Ryan Carthy Walsh in the high jump (Adamstown) who cleared 2.09m at the Leinsters last week.
Christopher O’Donnell (North Sligo) and Mollie O’Reilly (DSD) will look to make their mark in the U19 400m as will Carla Sweeney (WSAF) in the 800m and 1500m. Others looking to bid for middle distance medals are Emma O’Brien (Inbhear Dee) in the U18s and Claire Rafter (Tullamore Harriers), Enya Haigney (Omagh Harriers), Tamzin Muldowney (Midleton) in the U17s.
