David McCarthy wins senior 1,500m in style - Paul Hession new Irish record of 10.28 in 100m!! 20.67 for 200m in Greece What a fantastic day of athletics at the KitKat All Ireland schools track and field championships. Many of the results went according to the form book but there were plenty of surprises as well. A few showers during a dull overcast day could have been a lot worse, while the strong wind made life difficult for the athletes. After a rare defeat in the 800m at the KitKat Munster schools championships David McCarthy from St. Augustine’s Dungarvan was rarin’ to go in the senior 1,500m. He took the lead from the gun with John Coghlan from Castleknock on his shoulder. That order remained the same for the first two laps when McCarthy started to pull away. From there to the finish it was a procession as the Waterford man increased his lead all the way to win in 3:52.27, with Coghlan having to fight off a very strong late challenge from Ian Ward from Royal and Prior around four seconds behind. Winner of the Munster 800m Niall Tuohy tracked Anton Leighio all the way, going through in 55 and then went for home with 200m remaining, going on to win impressively in a new PB time of 1:53.24. Waterford remained in the limelight when Kelly Proper won the senior long jump with a new schools record of 6.20m. Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll was another in record breaking form, winning the senior 3,000m in 9:43.02 for a comprehensive victory. Noel Collins only had the clock to beat in the intermediate 1,500m steeplechase and he did so in style, smashing Colin Costelloe’s record to win in 4:18.30. Joan Healy recorded a junior 100m / 200m double in record breaking style, winning the 100m in 12.10 and the 200m in 24.67. Niamh Whelan repeated the double at senior level with a 11.90 100m win and 24.13 200m win. Eoin Hannon jumped 7.33m to win the senior long jump and made it a double with victory in the high hurdles. Aidan Kennedy took second in the long jump with 7.11m and David Quilligan was third with 6.95. Chris Russell set a new PB in winning the senior 100m with 10.81, but had to settle for second in the 200m behind Michael Hynes who was second in the 100m. Koroush Foroughi cleared 2m to win the intermediate high jump. Roisin Anglin was well clear as she entered the home straight in the senior 400m. However, a determined effort from Mairead Deevy brought her past her rival almost on the line for a win that did not look likely 100m earlier. Results - Photos to follow
