Over the past month combined event athletes from all over the country have been put to the test in their bid to secure a coveted place in the KitKat All-Ireland Schools’ Combined Events Championship which will take place this Saturday, 30th September 2006 at Morton Stadium, Santry at 10.00am. With the qualifying events over, the best combined eventers in Ireland will converge on Morton Stadium to compete in what promises to be an exciting showcase of Irelands top schools’ athletes. The Intermediate Girls competition is particularly interesting with multi-talented Kalyn Sheehan, Ursuline Waterford, Grainne Moggan, Sancta Maria Ballyroan, Claire Rockall, Calasanctius Oranmore and Katie Hewitt, Sullivan Upper School, all outstanding athletes in their own right. Kalyn competed in the World Junior Championships in August, Grainne won the high jump at the Schools’ International and at the AAA Championships in Birmingham and Claire is an International Basketball player. Another close contest is expected in the Intermediate Boys’ competition with the Leinster Champion, Paul Byrne, Carlow CBS, Christopher Russell, Waterpark, Jason Harvey, Campbell College, and Ben Reynolds, Sullivan Upper School, the favourites. Others to keep an eye on include the talented, Daniel Africano, St Raphael’s Loughrea, Jamie Keogh, Carlow CBS, and Patrick Palmer, St Augustine’s Dungarvan, in the Junior Boys’ competition. While in the Junior Girls’ competition Orla Finn, Kinsale Community School and Catriona Farrell, Athenry Vocational School, are talented athletes at the beginning of their careers. Following Saturday’s event, the KitKat Irish Schools’ Team will be selected to contest the upcoming annual Schools’ Combined Events International which will be held in Kelvin Hall, Glasgow on 9th December 2006.
