Two weeks ago, Longford Athletics Club gathered to watch their local hero, Cian McPhillips, compete in a global final.
As the 23-year-old entered the home straight and started closing down the leaders, the Longford Athletics Centre erupted, and on Friday, the club returned to the same venue to welcome McPhillips home.
Club committee member and coach Barry Sheill led proceedings and interviewed McPhillips for the crowd that attended, where they also relived the 800m final from two weeks ago.
McPhillips’ coaching and support team of Joe Ryan, Martina McCarthy and Ciara McCallion also provided insight into their experiences of supporting him and watching him perform at the highest level.
Athletics Ireland President Bríd Golden and former President John Cronin attended the event alongside past and present members of the Midlands club.
