Peter Lynch (Kilkenny City Harriers) has broken the Irish senior marathon record.
Racing in the Düsseldorf Marathon in Germany, the 27-year-old clocked a time of 2:09:36, which takes six seconds off the previous record held by Hiko Tonosa (Dundrum South Dublin AC) since the Dublin Marathon last October.
Lynch finished third in the race which was won by Alex Meier (USA) in 2:08.32. He paced his effort impressively, going through 10k in 30:45 and halfway in 1:04:49, finishing strongly to break the record.
The Kilkenny athlete has been in impressive form this year so far clocking 1:01:15 for the half marathon, 42:54 for 15km and a national 10 mile record of 45:59 earlier this month.
Fearghal Curtin (Youghal AC) was fourth in the race in 2:11:35, completing the distance for the first time. This moves the Cork man to tenth on the Irish all-time list.
