Niamh O'Sullivan and Pauric McKinney are Masters Winners The four races on the programme for the AAI intermediate and masters cross country championships all attracted big fields. The weather held up although underfoot conditions were extremely testing. First off were the masters women. The field here split up fairly sharply, with Niamh O’Sullivan from Riocht and Pauline Curley from Tullamore and Offaly away on their own early in the race. They raced together for much of the race, but O’Sullivan was the stronger and broke away midway through the second of two laps, going on to win comfortably. Carmel Parnell from Leevale and Cork made up significant ground throughout the race and finished third. Cork won the inter county and Sportsworld took the inter club title The masters men saw Pauric McKinney from Letterkenny and Donegal race clear of the field in the early stages. From the time he broke clear he was never challenged and he crossed the line an impressive winner from David Morwood from North Belfast Harriers and Belfast, with Colm Burke from Laois third. Letterkenny won the inter club contest and Donegal the inter county title. By the second lap of the intermediate women’s race the lead was shared by Jean Wilson from (Sportsworld and Dublin) and Deirdre McDermott (Naas and Kildare), with Mona Burt (Sportsworld and Dublin). However, it was Burt who was the strongest towards the finish as she overtook the other two and won a good race, with McDermott second and Teresa McGloin (Donegal) third. Donore won the inter club and Dublin the inter county. A group of seven runners broke clear of the field by the end of the first of five laps in the intermediate men’s race. The East Cork pair of James McCarthy and Sean McGrath headed this group and they were content to maintain a strong pace. As the lead group shrunk in size the two Cork men were in control and opened up a lead by halfway. While the field closed up on them again they simply pulled away again. Half a lap later the Cork men were clear again, with McCarthy making several attempts to break clear. It was halfway through the last lap before he finally broke his clubmate and he raced on to an excellent win, with McGrath second and Owen Gahan from Kilkenny third. Rathfarnham WSAF won the inter club and Dublin the inter county.
