Lorcan Murphy (Dundrum South Dublin AC) and Laura Frawley (Nenagh Olympic AC) were crowned national senior combined event champions after an action-packed weekend in Carlow.

Murphy won his first national senior title, winning the Men’s Decathlon in impressive fashion. He scored a total of 6305 points, putting him over 1000 points clear of silver medallist Noah Gilmore (Kilkenny City Harriers, 5203) and bronze medallist Ronan Bloomer (Mid Ulster AC, 4895).

The Dubliner’s standout performance came in the 100m, where he clocked a time of 10.37 (-0.2m/s) to gain over 1000 points. That run catapults him up to 12th on the Irish all-time list for the event.

In the Women’s Heptathlon, Laura Frawley claimed gold, scoring 4738 points. The Tipperary athlete’s standout performance came in the 100m Hurdles where she clocked 14.52 (+0.1m/s). Louise King (Dundrum South Dublin AC) won silver.

There was a dramatic result in the U20 Women’s Heptathlon, with the gold and silver medal coming down to the 800m. Caoimhe Fitzsimons (Ratoath AC) clocked 2:35.46, to finish ahead of Aoife Callan (Bandon AC) who ran 2:43.25. This meant Fitzsimons leapfrogged Callan by the slightest of margins; one point being all that could separate them after seven events.

Eddie Raicevic (Finisk Valley AC) was a comfortable winner of the Boys U18 title, while Ruby Cummins (Bandon AC) won the Girls U18 competition.

The AAI Games also took place over the weekend in Carlow, incorporating the national senior 10,000m championships. Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers AC) won a hard-fought gold medal in 32:36.26.

Other impressive AAI Games performances on Day One came from Orlaith Mannion (South Galway AC) who won the Women’s 100m Hurdles in 13.92 PB (+0.3m/s) and Sean Mockler (Moycarkey Coolcroo AC) who won the Men’s Hammer Throw with a best of 65.64m.

On Day Two, Mollie O’Reilly (Dundrum South Dublin AC) won both series of the Women’s 100m, clocking a best of 11.67 (+1.6m/s). Conor Cusack (Lake District AC) had another throw in excess of 70m to win the Men’s Javelin, 71.20m proving good enough to take victory.
