National Road Titles Up for Grabs as Biofreeze Irish Runner 5 Mile Returns to Phoenix Park

Road running fans are in for another thrilling morning of racing as the 2025 Biofreeze Irish Runner 5 Mile, incorporating the National 5 Mile Championships, takes centre stage in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on Sunday, June 29th at 9am.

This marks the second leg of the 2025 Athletics Ireland Race Series which is supported by Active Cities Dublin, following last month’s exciting Biofreeze Irish Runner 5k. Another bumper field is expected, with close to 2,500 runners set to take on the undulating five-mile loop through the heart of one of Europe’s largest city parks.

Last year’s champion Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock AC) is expected to return to defend his title in the men’s race, while it looks like we may have a new champion in the women’s race with 2024 gold medalist Ciara Wilson (DMP AC) not among the entries (at time of writing).

Kelly was in imperious form in 2024, kicking clear in the final 300m to take the title in 24:11, leading Raheny to team gold in the process.

Men’s Race Wide Open

A stacked men’s field is again anticipated, with Emmet Jennings (Dundrum South Dublin), Jake O’Regan (St John’s AC), and Kevin Dooney (Raheny Shamrock AC) just some of the names to look out for.

Defending team champions Raheny Shamrock AC will look to replicate their gold-medal performance in the race for senior team honours, but can expect stiff competition from the likes of Celbridge AC, Clonliffe Harriers, and Liffey Valley AC.

Women’s Title Up for Grabs

The women’s race looks equally open. Hannah Steeds (Leevale AC) has been in flying form on the roads over recent weeks and will be right in the mix, while last year’s bronze medallist Niamh O’Sullivan (An Ríocht AC) will be looking to move up the podium places come late Sunday morning. DSD have a habit of popping up with national road medals and don’t be surprised if Meghan Ryan (Dundrum South Dublin) and her teammates are to the fore once again.

Slí Cualann walked away with the senior women’s team title last year and can once again expect a huge challenge from Raheny and Moyne AC.
