On the 14th of June next, the University of Limerick Athletics Club is hosting an athletics match against American Universities Dartmouth and Brown. ULAC would like to invite any athletes interested in competing in this event to forward the following information to ulacmeet@gmail.com before the 8th of June. Name Event and Personal Best for event JADE JOHNSON TO COMPETE IN LONG JUMP AT NI & ULSTER CHAMPS Olympic Long Jump finalist and former Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jade Johnson will be competing at the NI & Ulster Championships at the Antrim Forum on 14th June. The event is sponsored by Antrim Borough council and is jointly organised by the governing body, Athletics Northern Ireland and the Ulster Athletics Council. Last year Johnson (who will be 28 this week) proved that she was right back to form following a lengthy spell of injury. She finished second in the UK Championships to arch rival Kelly Sotherton, the bronze hepthalon medallist from both the Olympic Games and the World Championships. Both athletes have featured prominently in the media following a series of spats as to who is the best British long jumper. Johnson has a PB of 6.80m from her 6th place in the 2004 Athens Olympics. This position reflected the fact that her event was one of the strongest in the Olympics- the competition was won by Lebedeva of Russia with the first 3 jumping over 7 metres. Jade’s other major achievement was just missing out on a medal in the 2003 World Championships in Paris. NI & Ulster Senior Track & Field Official photocall with the Mayor of Antrim Mr. Adrian Watson along with current NI 100m Champion Amy Foster and Paralympic World Championship medalist and Olympic hopeful Michael McKillop. Some 3 weeks ago Jade took the Surrey? title in a classy jump of 6.56m proving that she is in the sort of form to catch the eye of the selectors for the Beijing Olympics in August. In addition she captured her 3rd Inter Counties title last weekend in Bedford. Afterwards Jade commented that her recent loss of lottery funding has in fact made her focus more intently on her event which she is enjoying more than in the past. Another athlete competing at Antrim will be local javelin thrower Michael Allen. Like Johnson, Allen of Abbey AC has also emerged from a long period of injury which started shortly after his new NI record of 79.55 metres set in the championships 2 years ago. Now back to full fitness Allen threw a very useful 76.38m when winning the Loughborough International in mid May-his best for 2 years. He also followed this up with a win at the Bedford Games throwing 74.75m. His competition at Antrim will include GB Junior International James Campbell who recently took the British Universities title of 73.70m. Information on the event including timetable from www.niathletics.org The Irish Milers Club hosted another very successful event at the 46th annual Irish Schools in Tullamore today. In glorious sunshine and with an excellent crowd the IMC races got off to a great start with a personal best performance by Alan O’Brien in 3.54 with plenty in reserve. O’Brien only recently took up athletics and under the guidance of Crusaders coach Michael Mc Govern has made excellent progress in the past few months and is definitely a name to look out for over the coming months. Paul Fleming took the field through 800m in 2.04 with lead athletes of O’Brien, Thomas Fitzpatrick, James King, Des Earls, Liam Tremble and David Keogh in close contact. With the field going through the bell in 2.57, the group was tightly packed until the final 200m when O’Brien moved to the front and won comfortably from King and Fitzpatrick. The Women’s 800m was up next and Paul Fleming again took up the pace going through 400m in 62 seconds with Deirdre Byrne and UK based Rose Anne Galligan hot on his heels. Fleming keep up the pace until the final 150m which left Byrne on her own at the front coming home strongly in 2.06.38 with Galligan just two seconds behind. Laura Scriven and Louise Reilly finished third and fourth. The Men’s mile was highly anticipated with a top class domestic field assembled for the race. James Nolan is the first and only ever Irishman to run a sub 4 minute mile in Offaly and expectations were for him to repeat this feat today in front of the new Taoiseach and fellow Offaly man, Brian Cowen. Welsh athlete James Thie was charged with the pacing taking the field through splits of 58, 1.57 and 3.00 minutes for each lap followed by Nolan, Colm Rooney, Mark Christie, Liam Reale and David Mc Carthy. At the bell, Reale charged into the lead as the pacemaker dropped out and led until 300m to go when Nolan made his move. With 200m remaining Nolan and Christie broke away from the other three and hurtled towards the finish line. As the crowd rallied behind the two athletes, last years schools 1500m winner and Providence College athlete, David Mc Carthy came up on the shoulders of his older competitors resulting in a three horse race over the final 50m. Nolan hung on to win in 4.01.02 to win by a mere .03 of a second from Mc Carthy with Christie just 0.2 seconds off the winner. This resulted in probably the best ever finish to an IMC race and one that will remain in the memory of many people who witnessed it. The IMC would like to thank the Irish Schools Association and their officials for hosting the club at the event for our fifth year. We are delighted to be able to showcase Ireland’s former schools athletes on an annual basis in Tullamore and look forward to future races. The Club presented a medallion to each participant in the Boys and Girls Senior 1500M races.
