Ciara Mageean returns to Diamond League action in Zurich tomorrow evening (Sept 8th), 6 days on from her record breaking 1500m display in Brussels.
Mageean will take her place in Thursday’s flagship final, with nothing less than the title of Diamond League Champion on the line. The one-off final follows 12 global competitions where athletes have accumulated points for the opportunity to battle for glory in Zurich.
The recent European silver medallist arrives in Zurich having broken Sonia O'Sullivan's long-standing Irish 1500m record last Friday with a breath-taking 3.56.63 to beat a field stacked with world class athletes.
Thursday’s 1500m entry list looks just as high in quality and Mageean will take to the start-line as one of nine sub-4-minute athletes ready to battle it out.
The Portaferry star will once again face off against Scotland’s Laura Muir and Ethopia's Freweyni Hailu who finished behind Mageean in last week’s 1500m race in Belgium.
Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon has been imperious over the 1500m distance in recent times and looks the red-hot favourite. The two-time Olympic champion added a second world title to her name this summer. Less than a month ago, she posted the second fastest 1500m time in history with 3:50.37 - missing out on the world record by just 0.3 seconds.
The race is set for 6.59pm Irish time on Thursday September 8th and will be streamed live on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube Channel.
