Rooney Romps Home in Tullamore, Harty Wins Again Colm Rooney of Clonliffe Harriers put two disappointing seasons behind him with an excellent win in the Ronnie Delany Mile at the IMC event at the Irish Schools on Saturday 2nd June. The field lost home favourite James Nolan prior to the race due to illness but generated great excitement as many aspiring junior athletes looked on. The main group was brought through the half way mark in just over two minutes with some excellent pacing by Emmet Duleavy with Lee Merrien (Guernsey), Mark Christie (Mullingar Harriers) and Rooney in close attention. The pacemaker dropped out at the 1000m mark and Merrien took over the pacing duties, leading the field until the final 150m when Rooney made his move to burst past. Christie covered this move but Rooney had too much in reserve over the final 100m and pulled away for a comfortable victory in 4.03.88 with Christie running 4.04.79 and Merrien 4.05.74. In the NIKE 1500m Fintan Mc Gee (Lucan Harriers) looked like he is returning to some of his best, winning well in 3.54 ahead to Gavin O?Sullivan (Raheny AC) and Tadhg O?Callaghan (Togher). The Sonia O?Sullivan 800m was one of the most exciting IMC womens races in a number of years. Four women, Aoife Brady (Sportsworld), Kerry Harty (Newcastle), Lindsay Friel (Dromore) and the returning Hazel Murphy (DSD) entered the final 200m bunched together. With 150m remaining, Harty pulled ahead of Friel and Murphy followed however the Newcastle athlete who ran a personal best of 2.10 in her last IMC outing in Irishtown two weeks ago held on for the win in a time of 2.12.35. Murphy was second in a welcome return to action with the improving Brady just getting up on the line to pass Friel.
Leinster Track and Field Championships Some performances of note were: Gordon Kennedy (Tullamore Harriers) 47.62 in the 400m, Eoin Leen (Tralee Harriers) 53.38 in the Discus and Eileen O’Keeffe (KCH) 69.34 in the Hammer. Senior ResultsMasters Results
