Roisin Flanagan (Finn Valley AC) has finished 15th in the women’s 3,000m final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow this evening (March 2nd).

Flanagan clocked a personal best of 8:53.02 to cement her place in 5th on the Irish all time list behind Sarah Healy’s national record of 8:36.06 (2024).

Speaking after the race, Flanagan, who is based in Colorado in the United States, said: “It’s pretty incredible to be here. When I got the call, I didn’t think twice about it because these opportunities don’t come around too often to race the best of the best and to be in that field”.

She continued: “I knew coming in that these athletes had very fast personal bests, so I wanted to run smart and give myself a chance of running a personal best which is what I’ve done, so I have to be happy with that. I was hoping for a little bit faster, especially in that standard of race, but I was pretty dead by the end of it so I’m happy I gave it my all”.

The women’s 3,000m medals went the way of Elle St Pierre (USA) 8:20.87 CR, Gudaf Tsegay (ETH) 8:21.13, and Beatrice Chepkoech (KEN) 8:22.68 NR.

Day 3 of these championships will see the return of Limerick’s Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC) who will make her first appearance at Glasgow 2024 in the heats of the 60m hurdles tomorrow morning (10.46am). Lavin will take to the Emirates Arena on back of a string of outstanding performances, most recently when clocking an equal PB of 7.91 on her way to claiming her sixth national indoor 60m hurdles title.

Lavin will once again face a world class field, but will undoubtably be looking to replicate her appearance in the 60m hurdles final at the 2022 World Indoor Championships.

The women’s 4x400m relay team has proved to be one of Ireland’s most consistent performers at major championships and another huge showing can be expected from the team of Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC), Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC), Phil Healy (Bandon AC), Roisin Harrison (Emerald AC), Rachel McCann (North Down AC), and Lauren Cadden (Sligo AC) in the first of tomorrow’s relay heats set for 11.38am.

The team have been drawn in a tough heat alongside Belgium, United States, and the Netherlands but will very much have set sights on making the evening’s final. The first two finishers plus two fastest non-automatic qualifiers will make it through to the final set for 8.30pm.
