Team Ireland’s campaign at the World Para Athletics Championships got off to a dream start, with two historic gold medals in a single day.
Greta Streimikyte stormed to victory in the T12/13 1500m, claiming her first-ever World Championship medal. The three-time Paralympian took control of the race from the outset, leading the pack and powering clear in the closing stages to cross the line in 4:39.62. “To be honest I like taking a race, taking it on so I just took the opportunity,” she said after her win. This was Streimikyte’s only event at these championships, making her gold even more special.
Later, Orla Comerford stunned a packed stadium with a phenomenal run in the T13 100m final, clocking 11.88 seconds to become World Champion and secure her first World Championship medal. “It feels amazing! I feel like all season this was my goal… I knew that I had to work hard,” Comerford reflected. This gold follows her bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, where she ran 11.94 seconds in the same event.
Lana Sutton also made her World Championships debut, placing fourth in her T38 100m heat with a time of 13.01 to qualify for the final. (More to follow)
